Hair Transplant Guide · Updated 24 October 2026
Distinguish early transplanted hair shedding from changes in existing or donor hair.
Different types of shedding
Visible transplanted hair shafts may shed in the weeks after a procedure; this does not always mean the follicles have been lost. Temporary loss in surrounding existing hair and thinning in the donor area should be assessed separately. Baseline photographs and clinical findings help make that distinction.
Individual timing
The start, amount and timing of new growth vary. Less shedding or earlier growth in one patient does not predict another patient’s result. Use the follow-up intervals recommended by your clinic rather than weekly comparisons.
Can a photograph diagnose graft loss?
A single shed hair or internet photograph cannot diagnose graft loss. Tell your team about bleeding, an impact or an unexpected change so timing and other symptoms can be assessed together.
What to do
Continue your written washing and care plan, do not pull scabs or scratch the recipient area, and do not start new medicines, lotions or supplements on your own. Send consistent photographs. Contact your clinic promptly for worsening symptoms, severe or increasing pain, persistent bleeding, fever or discharge.
