Why Are Two Hair Transplant Sessions Sometimes Needed?
Why Are Two Hair Transplant Sessions Sometimes Needed? Read about the biological basis, individual planning and clinical considerations.
Why might one session be insufficient?
In extensive hair loss, recipient needs may exceed the number of grafts that can be safely harvested in one session. Hair diameter, hairs per graft and the condition of existing hair also affect the result.
Does a second session always mean failure?
No. Some patients have the front prioritised and the crown deferred. However, the reason for a second session should be clearly explained rather than presented as an automatic sales package.
Why preserve the donor area?
Hair loss may progress over the years. Exhausting donor reserves today can limit future options if new areas of loss develop. A high graft count in one session is not, by itself, evidence of success.
Priorities in KSD planning
The frontal region, midscalp and vertex are assessed separately. Graft count, hair diameter, intended coverage and remaining safe reserves are considered together. The decision between one or several sessions is individual.
Frequently asked questions
When is a second session performed? The physician decides after healing and assessment of the first result. Does it mean the first operation was poorly performed? No. Can everyone have 6,000 grafts? No: safe capacity varies.
