PRP for Hair Loss: What Do Studies Show?
Platelet-rich plasma, variable protocols, clinical evidence and limits of claims after hair transplantation.
What is PRP?
Platelet-rich plasma is prepared from the patient’s blood. Centrifugation, platelet and leukocyte concentrations and activation vary; there is no single standard preparation.
Effectiveness
Positive randomised trials exist for androgenetic alopecia. Small samples, different controls and short follow-up prevent a universal success percentage.
Where it may help
It may support thinning areas where follicles remain. Creating new follicles in completely follicle-free scarred tissue has not been established.
Risks
Injection pain, bleeding, infection and vasovagal reactions are possible. Aseptic technique matters.
After transplantation
PRP cannot be claimed to guarantee every graft’s survival. Standardised photographs and trichoscopy support objective follow-up.
Limits of the evidence
These are selected clinical sources and expert recommendations, not a new systematic review. Formulations, participants, controls, follow-up and adverse-event reporting differ. Positive findings do not establish identical benefit or local authorisation for every patient or product.
Topic-specific questions
Are all PRP preparations equivalent?
No. Preparation and cellular composition vary, which limits comparisons.
Does PRP guarantee transplanted graft survival?
No. An adjunctive treatment cannot guarantee the outcome of every graft.
