How Is Donor Area Capacity Calculated?
How Is Donor Area Capacity Calculated? Read about the biological basis, individual planning and clinical considerations.
Why is the donor area limited?
Follicular units removed with FUE cannot be assumed to regenerate in the same place. Excessively dense or uneven harvesting may cause visible thinning and dot-like scars. Graft numbers must therefore be planned for both the current area of loss and possible future hair loss.
Which measurements determine capacity?
Trichoscopy examines follicular unit density, hair counts, diameter and miniaturisation in different regions. Safe donor boundaries, previous operations and scalp characteristics are also assessed. Hairs per graft and the total graft count are different measurements.
Can everyone have 5,000 grafts harvested?
No. A suitable graft count for one patient may mean overharvesting for another. A fixed number or a definite promise based only on photographs cannot replace scientific planning.
The KSD approach
KSD planning matches recipient needs with safe donor capacity. Separate priorities are set for the hairline, midscalp and crown, and the distribution of suitable single- and multi-hair grafts is assessed. The final decision depends on examination.
Frequently asked questions
Does the donor area produce hair again? An extracted follicular unit does not regenerate in the same place. Is a second transplant possible? Remaining reserves and future needs must be considered together. Are more grafts better? Only when safe reserves are preserved and grafts are appropriately distributed in the recipient area.
