Is a Hair Transplant Permanent? Can Transplanted Hair Fall Out Again?

Understand the longevity of transplanted hair, the importance of the donor area and why existing hair may continue to thin.

Medical review pending

Hair transplant results can be long-lasting in many patients. This is because follicles taken from a suitable donor area are relatively resistant to androgenetic hair loss. However, no donor area should be considered absolutely unchanged for life in every patient.

Why can transplanted hair last a long time?

Follicles can retain a substantial part of their biological characteristics after being moved to another area. This principle is a foundation of hair restoration.

Does transplanted hair never shed?

Transplanted hair shafts continue their normal hair cycle. Temporary shedding during the first weeks may not mean that follicles have been lost. Over the longer term, donor-area miniaturisation, ageing and accompanying hair disorders may affect the result.

What happens to existing hair?

Hair that has not been transplanted and is susceptible to androgenetic alopecia may continue to thin. This makes it important, particularly in younger patients, to estimate future hair loss and assess appropriate medical options.

The KSD approach

Assessment of the safe donor area, evaluation of miniaturisation and planning for the years ahead form a broader strategy than simply covering the area that is visibly thin today.
