Microneedling and Dermarollers: Added Benefit with Minoxidil
Evidence for combined microneedling and minoxidil, study heterogeneity and procedural risks.
Mechanism
Controlled micro-injury can affect healing signals and penetration of topical agents. Depth and frequency matter for safety.
Meta-analysis
A 2025 meta-analysis identified 12 randomised trials with 631 patients. Combination therapy improved hair count versus minoxidil alone, with high between-study heterogeneity (I² 88%). This is not a uniform protocol for every patient.
Risks
Infection, bleeding, irritation, scarring and increased systemic drug absorption can occur. Aggressive home treatment is not recommended.
After transplantation
Early treatment over fresh grafts risks mechanical injury. Timing depends on wound healing and medical assessment.
Limits of the evidence
These are selected clinical sources and expert recommendations, not a new systematic review. Formulations, participants, controls, follow-up and adverse-event reporting differ. Positive findings do not establish identical benefit or local authorisation for every patient or product.
Topic-specific questions
Does the meta-analysis establish one ideal needle depth?
No. Heterogeneous protocols do not establish one universally optimal depth or schedule.
Can fresh grafts be treated with a dermaroller?
Early mechanical trauma can damage the healing area; timing requires the surgical team’s assessment.
