LLLT and LED: Light-Based Treatment for Hair Loss
Photobiomodulation, clinical evidence, device differences and safety considerations.
Mechanism
Low-level light may influence cellular signalling. Wavelength, energy, exposure time and device design matter.
Effectiveness
Some controlled studies in androgenetic alopecia report increased hair density. Device and follow-up differences limit generalisation.
Limits
Regular use is required. Creating new follicles in scarred, follicle-free areas has not been established.
Safety
Eye protection, photosensitivity and device instructions must be considered. Commercial devices cannot all be assumed equally effective.
Limits of the evidence
These are selected clinical sources and expert recommendations, not a new systematic review. Formulations, participants, controls, follow-up and adverse-event reporting differ. Positive findings do not establish identical benefit or local authorisation for every patient or product.
Topic-specific questions
Are every LED lamp and medical LLLT device equivalent?
No. Light source, wavelength, output and the evidence for that device differ.
Can light treatment create follicles in a scarred bald area?
That effect has not been established; diagnosis and remaining follicles matter.
