What Is the Difference Between FUE and DHI?

How do harvesting, recipient-site creation and implantation differ in FUE and DHI? What to know when considering your options.

Medical review pending

FUE and DHI are often described as two entirely separate hair transplant methods. In fact, FUE primarily describes the individual extraction of grafts from the donor area. DHI refers to an approach in which grafts are placed into the recipient area with an implanter pen. In the same operation, grafts harvested using FUE can be implanted using DHI.

What happens during FUE harvesting?

Follicular units are separated and extracted individually with a punch. Intact graft harvesting, protection of the donor area and appropriate storage of the extracted grafts are important.

What is different about DHI implantation?

In DHI, grafts are loaded into suitable implanter pens and transferred to the recipient area. Graft loading and control of angle, direction and depth are important. The DHI name itself does not guarantee higher graft survival or better density for every patient.

Which is better?

The useful question is which plan suits the patient's hair and skin characteristics, the size of the recipient area, existing hair density and the surgical team's experience. Graft selection for the hairline and natural angle design are important regardless of the device used.

From the KSD perspective

The KSD approach considers donor protection, the distinction between single-hair and multi-hair grafts, and regional placement planning together. Different tools and techniques may be used according to the patient's needs.
