What Is a Follicular Unit? How Many Hairs Are in a Graft?
What Is a Follicular Unit? How Many Hairs Are in a Graft? Read about the biological basis, individual planning and clinical considerations.
Understand the differences between a follicular unit, a graft and a hair shaft.
A graft is not the same as a hair shaft
A follicular unit contains one or several terminal hair follicles grouped with associated tissues. In transplantation, a graft usually represents one follicular unit. Therefore, 3,000 grafts do not mean 3,000 hairs.
Single- and multi-hair grafts
Suitable single-hair grafts are preferred for a natural hairline transition. Farther back, grafts containing two, three or more hairs may improve visual fullness. Diameter, angle, direction and area size matter alongside graft type.
In the KSD approach
Planning considers hairs per graft and donor reserves, not only graft count. A fixed graft distribution is not applied to every patient.
A common question
Is this information sufficient for an individual treatment decision? No. The appropriate method, graft count and risks require individual examination.
