Why does the donor area matter?
Follicles available for transplantation are a limited resource. Safe donor area size, hair density and possible future loss determine the scope of surgery.
Which measurements are taken?
Trichoscopy assesses follicular unit density, hairs per unit, shaft diameter and miniaturisation together. Occipital and lateral regions should be examined separately; a single-point measurement may not represent the entire area.
How is graft capacity determined?
Available graft numbers are not simply grafts per square centimetre multiplied by total area. Safe boundaries, extraction distribution, visible thinning risk and potential future reserves must be calculated together.
The KSD approach
KSD planning aims to preserve the donor area’s long-term appearance as well as cover current loss. Measurements and patient expectations inform an individual plan.
Frequently asked questions
Does the same plan apply to everyone? No. Examination findings, donor capacity and expectations differ.
Can definite graft counts or success rates be established online? No. Photographs permit preliminary assessment; a definitive plan requires clinical examination.
